PACK 526 PINEWOOD DERBY RACE RULES race date: January 30th, 2011 |

1. Assignment to heat races will be made as the cars are weighed and measured. 2. The competition will run continuously until the winners are determined, using a point based ladderless method.
3. The race will be run on a four-lane track. Each car will run a race on each track. Points will be awarded according to the placing in each race. 1 st = 1 point and so on. The lowest total score wins. In case of a tie there will be a winner -take-all run-off A coin toss will decide lane assignment for the run-off. Each car is guaranteed at least four (4) races.
4. An electronic timing device which records 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places by lanes will be used to determine the winners. Lanes will be changed for the run-off heats at the discretion of the judges. 5. All cars must be made from the Pinewood Derby Kit #L1622. No hobby shop or other car kits or parts are allowed. Specifications and Inspection Points are as follows: a. Car must have been made this school year. (honor system - A scout is trustworthy!) b. Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches. c. Length shall not exceed 7 inches. d. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces (using 2 place precision – 5.00) e. Axles, wheels, and body wood shall be from the kit. Wheels have to have “BSA” molded into the wheel. f. Axles (nails provided in kit) must be driven into the main body of the car. The main body of the car must be made from the wood provided in the kit. Deburring and polishing of axles is encouraged. g. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited. h. The car shall not ride on any kind of springs. i. The car must be freewheeling with no type of starting device. j. Wheels may not be altered in anyway except to remove mold marks (primarily on wheel treads.) Tire tread surface cross-section must be flat within reason. Rounding the corners of the tread surface is prohibited. Removing wheel material reduces the weight of the wheel and is prohibited. Wafering or radiusing of wheels is prohibited. The serrated edge of the tread surface must remain intact. Wheels without the serrated edge are illegal. Wheels may be polished. k. Styling and customizing of cars is encouraged. Details added must be within length, width, and weight limits. Details can be of any material (wood, plastic, metal, etc) not prohibited by other rules. l. No loose materials of any kind are allowed in or on the car. If the car rattles, other than the wheels, it will be disqualified. m. Only dry lubricants provided at the race are allowed. Liquid lubricants are prohibited. Cars found to be oily or using liquid lubricants will not be allowed to race. n. Cars must be presented to the inspectors who will handle the car during the inspection. o. The scout can only race with scouts of the same rank. p. Only the scout can touch their cars. No adult help allowed unless the scout is a Tiger Scout. q. If the car does not pass inspection, the scout will be given the chance to correct until the group’s cut off time is announced. r. Parts needed to make the car able to run can be purchased at the race, if the scout does not have the parts. Not following all of the rules will result in disciplinary actions up to and including disqualification. 6. After passing technical inspection and registration, drivers should prepare their cars for the first heat and place it in the pit area where they are under the jurisdiction of the chief steward. Cars are not to leave the pit/race area until all racing for that rank is complete. 7. Each heat will be announced. Drivers will report to the starting line and place their cars on the track. At the same time, the names of the boys for the following heat will be called, at which time they will prepare their cars. All lubricating and other preparation must be done only in the pit area and only by the boy. All other persons must remain behind the barriers. 8. The starter will make sure the cars are on the track properly before starting the race. 9. The drivers will report to the finish line to pick up their cars. 10. When the results of each heat are recorded, the drivers will take their cars back to the pit area and return to their seats.
11. In the event a car jumps the track, the heat will be reran with each car moving one lane to the right (" 1" to "2" and so on with "4" going to "1"). If the same car jumps the track the second time, it will be . disqualified. If the disqualified car has interfered with another car(s), the heat will be rerun with the remaining cars. If no interference has resulted, the heat results will stand. If a different car jumps the same lane that caused the rerun, the race will be halted and the track will be inspected and corrected. Then, the heat will be rerun will all four cars being eligible.
12. All cars will be placed in the pit area upon qualification and the winning of a heat and will be under the jurisdiction of the chief steward. The driver (Cub Scout) is the only person who can lubricate the wheels; and this must only be done in the pit area.
13.In the event that a car is damaged during racing and has not been disqualified for any reason, the driver and sponsor (partner) may attempt to repair the car in the pit area under the jurisdiction of the steward.
14.Under no circumstance can any material except dry lubricants or glue be added to the car after it has been weighed. The steward retains the right to inspect or reweigh cars at any time. 15.If any situation arises that is not specifically covered by these rules, the Pack Pinewood Derby Committee will determine the ruling. The Committee's decision will be final. 16.All cars must be ready when called to race or they will be disqualified. 17.We encourage all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Leaders to be in uniform. |
