  1. What is Turning Point?
    Turning Point is a non-profit organization designed to provide 24-hour emergency services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

    Turning Point is also a primary partner in the Step Ahead Council of Jackson County's CARe Initiative (Communities Against Rape).

    Turning Point provides food, clothing and personal care items for short-term relief.

    Emergency transportation is also available from anywhere in our service area to the shelter.

    Advocacy, support groups, a children's program and a strong referral system provide immediate assistance.

    A 24-hour crisis line (1-800-221-6311) provides immediate crisis intervention.

    Our 30-day emergency shelter for victims provides safety, refuge and confidentiality.

    Our Community Outreach Service provides support groups, domestic violence and sexual assault education.

    Should you need emergency shelter, we will help you with a 30-day self-sufficiency plan to assist you in beginning a violence-free lifestyle.

  5. What can Turning Point do for children?
    Your children will receive domestic violence education centered on preparing them for the future. Our children's program is committed to helping young people address issues such as self-esteem and conflict resolution.

    The importance of a children's program stems from statistics documenting child abuse in fifty percent of wife-abusing families. Seventy-three percent of boys who are abused grow up to be abusers themselves.

  8. Doesn't domestic violence affect only a small percentage of people?
    Today there are 2 - 6 million battered women, with approximately 25% of couples involved in a violent relationship.

    Each year over 4,000 women are killed by domestic violence.

    Battering is the leading cause of injury to women, even greater than automobile accidents.

  9. Aren't only minorities and the poor battered?
    Domestic violence doesn't discriminate on the bases of race, class, age or education.

    Abuse occurs in white, black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, wealthy, middle class and poor families alike.

    Studies have shown that women are not protected from domestic violence by their, or their assailant's, religious beliefs.
