Jackson County CARe Initiative
CARe, Communities Against Rape, is dedicated to educating and raising public awareness about the impact of rape and other sexual crimes on the survivor, perpetrator, and the community at large, especially among our young people.

The Jackson County CARe Initiative is a direct services program under the auspices of the Community Violence Prevention Council of Jackson County in partnership with Purdue University 4-H Youth Department, Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, Jackson County Domestic Violence Task Force, Turning Point Domestic Violence Center and Girls, Inc.

The Jackson County CARe Initiative is a network of students and teachers, public school systems, youth organizations and adult experts, social service agencies, health care providers, law enforcement officials and concerned individuals from every community in Jackson County working together to reduce sexual assault and rape, particularly among our youth aged 12 to 21.

Prevalent Misconceptions About Sexual Crime
  • 50% of eighth and ninth graders said rape is sometimes the victim's fault.
  • 40% agreed girls who wear sexy clothes are "asking to be raped."
  • Over 33% felt they would not be arrested if they forced a dating partner to have sex.
  • One in 12 college men admitted to behaviors that qualify as rape or attempted rape.

Some Important Facts About Sexual Crime
  • Every 41 seconds an adult woman is raped in America.
  • 50% of all victims are 12-24 years of age.
  • One in six college women is raped.
  • More than 90% of college women raped did not tell the police.
  • One in 10 men is raped in his lifetime.
  • 60%-80% of women who are raped know their attackers.
  • 57% of rapes occur on a date, and 60% of sexual assaults occur in homes.
  • 94%-96% of girls raped under age 12 are victims of family members or acquaintances.
  • Up to 70% of people with developmental disabilities are sexually assaulted.

Indiana Statistics
  • 1,928 rapes were reported by adults in 1997. The actual number could be 10,000 or more, due to under-reporting by victims to the police and by police to the FBI.
  • In 1996, only 178 cases resulted in arrest.
  • 3,421 cases of child sexual abuse were substantiated in 1997.

  • Sexual violence is the most under-reported of all crimes. Nationwide, only 31% of sexual assaults are reported to police.
